Overview
Structural steel and pipe racks in an operating plant were recoated with a protective system matched to the exposure. The work was phased around production, with containment around each active line.
The challenge
The existing coating had failed at connections and along the bottom flanges, with active corrosion in the wettest areas. Work could only happen inside agreed shutdown windows, and cure times had to fit them.
The solution
Steel was prepared to SSPC-SP 6 where corrosion had broken through and to SSPC-SP 3 elsewhere, then coated with a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish. Film build was checked with a dry film thickness gauge per SSPC-PA 2, and safety rails were finished in their marking colors.
